Changes in Colombia’s Healthcare System: How can businesses take advantage of new opportunities?

The health system in Colombia has faced some changes, implemented through administrative channels, while the health reform is being discussed in Congress. This implies a series of challenges, but also opportunities for the companies in the sector, mainly related to the decentralization of services, strengthening of Primary Care and positioning with new relevant actors in the current context.
The changes proposed in the health system bring with them a territorial approach that allows private actors to position themselves with health secretariats and public and private service providers, who have acquired new responsibilities and/or competencies in the proposed health model.
“Despite the challenges, the reform offers companies the opportunity to collaborate with the government at a national and territorial level, in the implementation of innovative solutions for closing gaps in care at a regional level. The strengthening of hospital infrastructure, the growth of telemedicine and digitalization are trends that will mark the future of the sector,” mentions Camila Barragán, public affairs manager at Prospectiva.
In addition, the transformation of the system will expand the market for medical devices, promoting the provision of advanced equipment and technologies. With a focus on preventive health, the demand for advanced monitoring technologies and digital solutions will become a priority to close care gaps in the territories. The strengthening of hospital infrastructure will also generate opportunities for new public-private partnerships, allowing companies to position themselves as key players in the evolution of Colombia’s healthcare system.
Regarding the pharmaceutical sector, an agenda is currently being developed to strengthen the local production of medicines, vaccines and health technologies, which generates opportunities for collaboration between the private and public sectors to develop projects involving knowledge and technology transfer.
Changes in the healthcare system are imminent, so the private sector must prepare and keep up with legislative and regulatory changes, as well as be aware of updates in the National Government’s priorities, in order to adapt and take advantage of opportunities to enhance their business objectives with social impact.
